How to Get Cheap Truck Insurance

Trucks are great for hauling stuff but aren’t so great for insurance because it generally costs more to insure trucks than cars. Why does truck insurance cost more, and how can you find cheap truck insurance?

Why is Truck Insurance More Costly?

Trucks cost more to insure than cars for four main reasons:

* Drivers of trucks, as a whole, don’t have great driving records. So while you may be accident and ticket free (and make sure you get a discount for that), you’re still going to be paying for the mistakes of other truck drivers.

* Trucks cost more than cars, so the insurance costs more too, just in case the insurance company has to replace your truck.

* Trucks are big and heavy. In an accident, they tend to inflict more damage on smaller vehicles and more injuries to the occupants of those vehicles. If the accident is your fault, that’s more money from your insurance company.

* Trucks are stolen more often than cars.

Finding Cheap Truck Insurance

The good news is that you can find cheap truck insurance. It helps if you buy the right truck: one that has a good safety record and isn’t a prime target of thieves. This information is available online or you can check with your insurance professional.

You can also save on truck insurance by comparison shopping among insurance companies. Truck insurance quotes vary widely from one insurance company to another, but you can easily get multiple quotes from A-rated insurance companies.

All you have to do is go online to an insurance comparison website and type in your insurance information. The website will match your information and needs with various insurance companies, which will then send you quotes. You just review the quotes and select the best one for you.

I can’t get insurance, what do I do?

I am 20 yrs old, I need commercial auto insurance for two trucks. Isuzu NPR-HD’s one new, one used. (2007 New, 2001 w/177K) both at 14,500 gvw. the trucks are small and the business idea is simple. Haul away peoples unwanted stuff to the dump, but the insurance won’t cover me. Anywhere. I’ve been told to try to find a start up insurance company to take a gamble on me, how do I find one? What else can I do? Please advise.

I recently got a quote MUCH lower than previous ones, but the insurance agent, I think, doesn’t understand exactly what I will be doing. He knows I have a construction business, but thats it, I didn’t clue him in on hauling stuff to the dump. Is this legal? Should I get the insurance through this guy? He is ten times less than everyone else!!
Thanks!!!
I just want to be legal on the road. I don’t care about anything else.

The problem with a business like that is you need TWO TYPES of insurance: you need auto liability, and you still need GENERAL liability to cover the “other” stuff.

What you need is Commercial Truck Insurance, short-haul, and you will need to provide a LOT of information. For example, where you park the trucks when they’re not in use, is it fenced / covered / locked / guarded, can make a difference in your premiums. As are the capacity of your vehicles, the driving history of your drivers (sounds like you’ll be driving?), and so on and so forth.

I can give you my agent’s number, but I can’t guarantee they’ll want to cover you either. Kline Transportation Insurance: (858) 675-6444

In fact, visit their website, http://www.klineinsurance.com, and download their quote kit, and fax it in, and talk to someone and see if there’s something relatively cheap you can do to make you insurable.

Insurance rates should be within 10-15% of others. If this guy’s MUCH cheaper than the others, something’s not kosher. Either he’s not covering something that needs to be, or he’s squeezing some sort of bottom-line like minimum liability, maximum deductible, and so on. Make sure you’re covering oranges to oranges.
